I had the good fortune of being able to give a brief presentation to the Lakeland City Commission this morning on LakelandPD's use of social media and other wireless or Internet-based technologies to tell our story to the public. A copy of the presentation with the prepared remarks is available here.
The emphasis of the presentation was how public safety agencies, and other government agencies for that matter, can use alternative communication strategies in addition to traditional media to communicate with the public and market what we are doing to create a safe Lakeland community.
Our goal is to help create an informed and engage public willing to partner with us to make our neighborhoods and streets a safe place to live, work, and raise a family. We appreciate the opportunity to share our experiences with the City Commission today.

Mike Oliver, KT2T, of the Lakeland Amateur Rafio Club here and thankful for the LPD's use of Twitter and other social networking media. As an amateur (ham) radio operator, I am keen to promote all methods of communication, whether it's our club operating out of the EOC at LPD or via SMS and Twitter. Thanks for everything you do for us!
