Lakeland Police K-9 teams competed in the 2012 United States Police Canine Association Region 1 Field Trials in Gulf Shores, Alabama, the week of February 20-23, 2012. During this event, each K-9 team is judged and scored on their performances in specific areas to show competency as a working police dog team. This method of evaluation has produced a very challenging field of competitive law enforcement officers who vie for ranking and standings as top dog and top K-9 units in Florida, Alabama and parts of Georgia. LPD put together two 4-man teams to compete in this event along with 51 other K-9 teams.
The two Lakeland Police teams took first and second place in 4-man department teams, as well as, taking the honors of having the “Top Dog” at the trial. The dedication and commitment to excellence displayed by the LPD K-9 Unit was unmatched as no other agency in the history of these trials has ever placed 1st and 2nd in the team competition.
