The Lakeland Police Department’s K-9 Unit recently hosted and participated in the USPCA National Detector Dog Trials. The event ran from May 20th through May 23rd and is designed to test the discipline of the detection ability for each competing K-9. Fifty seven teams from all over the nation came to this event and over a two day competition showcased their abilities in Narcotics and Ordinance (bomb) detection.
In February of this year, the members of the Lakeland Police K-9 Unit made Regional history with the first time that department teams won both first and second place at the Regional Patrol Dog Trials.
The K-9 Unit made history again this week, this time at the national level by securing the top three places in the department teams for Narcotics Detection.
1st place team for 2012, Sergeant Tye Thompson, K-9 “Harris” and Officer Jose Bosque, K-9 “Bronko”
2nd place for 2012, Officer Aaron Peterman, K-9 “Charief” and Officer Rob Manrow, K-9 “Qanto”
3rd place for 2012, Officer Jeff Barrett, K-9 “Echo” and Officer Ted Sealy, K-9 “Bruno”
Overall Individual Narcotics Detection Phase:
Officer Jeff Barrett and K-9 “Echo”, 2nd place
Officer Jose Bosque and K-9 “Bronko” 5th place
Officer Rob Manrow and K-9 “Qanto” 6th place
Sergeant Tye Thompson and K-9 “Harris” 8th place
Officer Aaron Peterman and K-9 “Charief” 11th place
Officer Ryan Back and K-9 “Remy” 19th place
Exterior Narcotics Detection Phase (vehicles):
Officer Ryan Back and K-9 “Remy” 3rd place
Interior Narcotics Detection Phase (rooms):
Officer Jeff Barrett and K-9 “Echo” 4th place
These accomplishments were made especially difficult on our K-9 teams by the fact that they were assisting in the logistical issues of facilitating this event, as well as training for, and ultimately competing in the trial.
The Lakeland Police Department is very proud of all the officers who represent our department not only in competitions, but day to day in their regular duties protecting our community. To become this proficient at their jobs at this level requires dedication and commitment to excellence.
GREAT WORK K-9 UNIT!!!!!!!
