On August 17, 2012, at 10:35 p.m., Lakeland Police responded to the area of South Florida Avenue and Carleton Street in reference to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, Lazaro Cuellaro, lying in the street.
The investigation revealed, a 2011 Honda Accord was traveling southbound on South Florida Avenue in the inside lane in the area of Carleton Street. Simultaneously, a pedestrian was walking eastbound across South Florida Avenue from the west side of the roadway in the area of the north access driveway to Hancock Fabrics.
The 2011 Honda struck the pedestrian in the inside southbound lane of travel on South Florida Avenue in the area of Carleton Street. The impact was on the left side of the vehicle and resulted in the pedestrian being thrown to the inside shared center turn lane.
The victim was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center as a life-threatening trauma alert. LRMC Trauma Personnel advised that the victim died as a result of his injuries at 11:26 p.m. Next of kin has been notified.
The traffic homicide team conducted the on-scene investigation. This case is still open and a post follow-up investigation will be completed.
